Emotion Scientist

Recognize: I was “Yellow” all last week.

“These are the emotions of joy, surprise, and excitement… What’s causing them? Something positive and possibly unexpected has happened and we’re celebrating inside. We’ve made significant steps toward an important goal. We’re anticipating an event or an experience that will make us happy.” - from “Permission to Feel” by Marc Brackett. (P2F)

According to P2F, (p.92) to understand my own feelings, I could think about:
-what just happened? What was I doing before this happened?
-what might have caused my feelings or reaction?
-what happened this morning, or last night, that might be involved in this?
-what has happened before with this person that might be connected? (in the event that your emotion has to do with a relationship.)
-what memories do I have about this situation or place?

I received good news about the program for next year! It was said Tiff will most likely be the second teacher, which means there will be some changes to how we organize and operate. This matters to me and affected my emotions because after the hardships of Winter I am optimistic regarding change and new things, finding novelty and new directions to grow in, so all of the ideas of possibilities bouncing in my head are fun for me. I didn’t regulate my emotions though, and this caused some hardships for my colleagues.

I was impulsive and created problems for all the people around me.

1. I changed a student’s schedule, and that created too many conflicts because of some of the contextual factors I missed due to “being in the yellow.”

2. I ignored best practices and some rules which contributed to creating a chaotic environment, ultimately causing some people to “go into the red”. (I assume).

Quotes that resonated with me:

“Behavior alone is a clue to the riddle, not an answer.” P2F p. 102.

“I can’t regulate my emotions until I know what I feel. And it will be hard to do that if the adults who are raising me don’t model the skills first or ask the right questions. Can you imagine how much miscommunication is caused by the inability to see behavior as simply a signal for emotions? This is why we have to be emotion, scientists, and not emotion judges.”

To further your understanding as an emotion scientist, consider the idea of analyzing emotions or other things in pairs, or groups.

Why do scales represent laws?

Scales are often used to represent laws because they symbolize balance, fairness, and impartiality. Just as scales ensure equal treatment and judgment by weighing evidence or arguments, laws aim to maintain justice and order in society by applying impartial standards. The image of scales is deeply ingrained in the concept of law, emphasizing the need for equilibrium and fairness in legal proceedings and decision-making.
